How to Connect Two or More Batteries Together

When you need to extend the runtime of your inverter, connecting multiple batteries is an innovative solution. There are two primary ways to connect batteries: in parallel or in series, depending on your needs and the type of batteries you have.

1. Parallel Configuration (for 12-Volt Batteries)

  • Purpose: Increase the overall amp-hours (capacity) while maintaining the same voltage.
  • How It Works: In a parallel configuration, you connect the positive terminals of each battery together and the negative terminals together. This setup keeps the voltage the same (12 volts) but doubles the capacity when using two batteries. For example, two 12-volt batteries with 100 amp-hours each will give you a total of 200 amp-hours.
  • Benefits: With more amp-hours, your inverter can run your appliances more extended before the batteries need recharging.

2. Series Configuration (for 6-Volt Batteries)

  • Purpose: Increase the voltage while maintaining the same amp-hours (capacity).
  • How It Works: In a series configuration, you connect the positive terminal of one 6-volt battery to the negative terminal of the next. The remaining positive and negative terminals will then provide a combined voltage of 12 volts. Note that 6-volt batteries must always be connected in pairs to achieve 12 volts.
  • Benefits: This setup is useful when you want to use 6-volt batteries but need a 12-volt system to run your inverter.

Important Tips:

  • Use Batteries of the Same Type and Age: Whether connecting in parallel or series, always use batteries of the same type, capacity, and age to ensure balanced charging and discharging. Mixing different batteries can lead to uneven wear and reduced performance.
  • Ensure Proper Connections: Double-check all connections to ensure they are tight and secure. Loose or incorrect connections can cause poor performance or damage your inverter or batteries.
  • Monitor Battery Health: Regularly check the health of your batteries, especially in a parallel setup, to ensure they are holding a charge properly. A weak battery in the setup can reduce the overall efficiency.

By correctly configuring your batteries, you can maximize the efficiency of your inverter system and ensure longer operating times for your devices.
